Annotative Bibliography Post Essay 4

Hambling, David. "GPS Signals Now Help You Call Your Mother, Power Your Home,                          And Even Land Your Plane.." New Scientist 209.2803 (2011): 44-47.Academic Search                       Premier. Web. 12 Apr. 2013.

Every day, many activities rely on the use of global positioning systems technologies. Airports use global positioning systems to track every airplane to coordinate their estimated time of arrival to keep the aircraft on time for the passengers and to keep a steady flow of aircraft landing at the airport all day. Banks and stock exchanges use the same technology to time stamp the deliveries of large amounts of money to prevent fraud. Cell phone companies use them to coordinate off which tower the customer will receive the strongest signal. GPS’s are being used in everyday life without people knowing it. With the application of numerous uses for the GPS society is becoming more dependent on them as a piece of technology. But there is also a device available to the public which is designed to jam nearby GPS units. These jammers have already affected airports and caused chaos in the air controller towers. These jammers can shut down all the runways of an airport, which is just another example of how our society is becoming more dependent on technology, especially global positioning systems.

The author of this source is David Hambling. In his article he mentions the results of experiments conducted by the U.S. Navy in 2010, and mentions the event of the Newark New Jersey International Airport in 2010, where it was believed to be a trucker on the New Jersey Turnpike who accidentally jammed the GPS signals for the airport.

This article fits into my essay because it mentions many more uses of GPS technology, and clearly makes many more points of how dependent our society is on GPS devices. It also has some info on how GPS technology works which will be useful in my intro for my article.

  1. I tried to even the lines up at the top with the citation but this website jacked them all up after I posted it.

  2. I think this is a well written annotative bibliography. The citation is well cited, you have your summary, reliability, and implications. Also, I have an understanding of the technology used here. The only thing I would like to comment on is that there seems to be a lot of summary. Maybe you can just add in a little analysis so we can see your point of view on the topic you about the technology your are speaking about.
